Welcome to another weekly wrap up
MLG Anaheim (325 Singles Entrants) – 6/20/2014, Anaheim, CA
Esports Max interviews with Cloud 9 Mango
An exciting weekend of events that featured over 70 sets between the top 20 players. C9.Mango came out on top with his relentless Fox, using a mixture of strong shield-pressure and lasers. P4K EMP Armada went undefeated in pools, but could not muster enough to overcome Mango in finals. P4K EMP Mew2King showed some grit, beating PPMD for the first time in over 6 months and took Armada to game 5 before losing. Nonetheless, this is an exciting start to the summer of smash

Smash @ Clarendon Happy Hour (60 Singles Entrants) – 6/19/2014, Arlington, VA
With several of MD/VA’s best out of town for MLG, the doors were open for someone new to take the crown at Clarendon. Wenbo, choosing only to play Falcon this time, defeated Smash G0D and his talented younger brother, lloD, on his way to 1st place. The rarely seen yet talented Kaffei (who entered as Fatboy69), surprised many by defeating both lloD and SypherPhoenix to claim 3rd.

4HYPE! (60 Singles Entrants) – 6/21/2014, Lawrence, KS
Midwestern regionals tend to be rare because all the major cities are spread out. Despite this, 4HYPE in Kansas had a strong turnout this year, with out of state attendance from Colorado, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. All four smash games were present at this tournament, with Melee getting 60 entrants and PM with 74 entrants. Colorado had a strong showing with El Lovo, a Falco/Link main and Slip-N-Slide, a Luigi main both making it far in bracket. This was also the first tournament in three years that Nebraska has traveled out of state for, with JBM and Smeesh representing their region well. Meanwhile, up and comers R. Frizzle from Kansas and Shinobi (dubbed “Midwestballz” by D1 at Fighter’s Edge) from Columbia, MO continue their strong showings in this region by both taking 5th place. Ultimately, it was a handful of stressful game 5 sets in grand finals that determined the victor, marking darkatma’s first overall win against darkrain.

Smash at Xanadu (34 Singles Entrants) – 6/17/2014, Baltimore, MD
The week of MLG brought a packed house to Xanadu. Normally a PM centered event (with over 100 entrants this particular Tuesday) over 30 melee players gathered to compete. MD/VA legends such as Husband and g-reg were in attendance, but DoH took home the title, beating Chu Dat’s Young Link counterpick for the first time in tournament to win Winners Finals 2-1. Chu was eliminated in third after an upset by Smash G0d, one of VA’s hidden bosses in another 2-1 set. Plank’s Sheik protege Hat took home fourth place.

NorCal Weeklies #1 (14 Singles Entrants) – 6/20/2014, San Carlos, CA
new weeklies tournament series held in San Carlos at the myungcenter.
for the fact that the tournament was held in such a casual manner (less than a weeks notice), almost have a 16-man bracket was pretty good. hope to increase attendance in the future.

Nebraska brought a car full of people to Get Hype1 in Kansas, JBM actually won get hype 2 in Kansas 2 years ago with Jace and MegaRobMan (NE) rounding out the top 3 (tacoom/yosh like 9th) and Smeesh/MegaRobMan got 7th last year at GH3 iirc with MaJiK and Yosh making it out of pools.
The tournament most recent to GH4 Rfrizzle beat JBM/Smeesh/Jace/MegaRobMan all in the same tournament.
Tyser got 5th or 7th at the last SMYM
Cue_David and Dekline went to EVO last year.
MegaRobMan won a tournament in Kentucky in 2012 and got 13th/7th in Chicago during the same time period, but you’ll be forgiven for not knowing about Rob since he’s strategically thought of as a brawl player (5th in that brawl tourney!)
JBM, Tyser, Smeesh, and MegaRobMan have all won/runnerup in melee tournaments in Iowa over the last 3 years, most recently JBM losing to Slayer at a tournament in February with like 36 or so people. Smeesh won a tournament a few weeks after that. But it hasn’t been too far away since JBM/Tyser/Rob place 1-3 at an Iowa melee tourney with MN/MO/IA/NE/KS players at it.
We skip out on MO because KCMO don’t usually have tournaments we know about and STL is 5 hours away, Rob did get 2nd in a PM tournament in MO in 2013 and Rolla/springfield is like 8.
CO is 8 hours away, though with those new laws 🙂
Hell, Rob even played Dr. PeePee in North Carolina and crashed at Darksydes house after an anime convention tourney.
tldr;
Nebraska mostly just go to tournaments in IA/KS we don’t really get out of the region too much but occasionally we make it to a major or regional. Nebraska kinda gets screwed by the midwest is too spread out thing. But we held a tournament with players from ND/SD/NE/KS/IA/MO/GA once.
Fun fact: Mango has now won exactly 1/5 of all tournaments with 100+ entrants in Melee’s history.
