Sudbury’s 9th installment of the Nickel City Smash tournament series was another successful and exhilarating day of events. ChampionSHPE 6 (33 Singles Entrants) – 4/18/2015, Urbana, IL

I’d just like to give a small shoutout to my tournament series ChampionSHPE. These tournaments go towards funding for either charity or SHPE (The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers). I began the series when i was elected project initiator for SHPE’s Freshman Round Table. My goals at the time were to get better at melee (as i had just begun playing), and what better way to do that than to bring together Champaign/Urbana’s top players? I could effectively make funds for an organization that i loved, and play melee with cool people. While the first tournaments were rough, as i had little TOing experience, they quickly became better. With these tournaments, the smash scene grew here at UIUC, spawning melee tournaments at the Illini Union, and encouraging for bigger tournaments such as #Endthepaign. #Endthepaign will be a philanthropy event for the Itsonus campaign which is focused on sexual assault awareness. Here is a link for #Endthepaign. https://www.facebook.com/events/796713763699047/

Shoreside PR Qualifier 1 (19 Singles Entrants) – 4/16/2015, Wilmington, NC

This was the first of three qualifiers to rank the top 5 players in Wilmington, NC. Wilmington has always been known as one of the least exciting places to go for Smash due to the fact that there were only three or four people in Wilmington that played. After over a year of networking, a student at UNC-Wilmington by the name of Austin Todd (Jukes) got together numerous groups of Smashers that he had found in Wilmington and is growing the scene. “I’m running these three PR qualifiers to generate hype and motivation here in Wilmington. There is so much potential here. It’s time to grow, it’s time to improve, and it’s time to get Wilmington, NC on the map.” – Austin Todd
