NeoNebulous #7 (171 Singles Entrants) – 3/28/2015, New York City, NY

neoneb

NeoNebulous is New York’s premier Melee tournament, regularly attracting the top players in the region. Last weekend, the Chinatown based event was graced by the god slayer himself, TSM|Leffen. The Swede was in town for vacation and decided to take a shot at tristate in a few spare hours. His presence drew out every name in the region and even some from outside. Zhu, The Moon, Cactus, Zanguzen, OTG, Dudutsai, Ryobeat, Smuckers and more came out to square off against the vicious Fox. A $100 bounty was placed on Leffen’s head, drawing out StricNyn3 and Chain Ace from New Jersey.
As more and more people streamed into the small Chinatown basement, it became clear that this was something special. As the Melee Games matches (Last semester’s winners, Columbia, were defeated by LI powerhouses Stony Brook) were underway, singles finally capped out at 171 entrants, the largest tournament in NY since Zenith. 70 people tossed their hats into the ring for doubles, with the easy favorites being Leffen and G$.
What ensued was the most exciting event Tristate has seen in some time. OTG and Dudutsai had an exhilarating pools match, with OTG narrowly taking it, last hit last stock. Despite people being almost certain of Leffen’s invincibility, slight signs of hope showed in his pools match, as Chain Ace took several respectable stocks from the Swedish champion, though he did ultimately lose. However, it set the tone for the day to come. NJ’s 2nd ranked Shiek, JFlex, had a monumental victory over The Moon (featuring a top 5 popoff), immediately followed by a win over Cactuar. Dizzkidboogie, the kindest Wobbler east of the Mississippi, took several stocks off of Leffen, coming incredibly close to taking a game (he ended with a 4th place finish). The 17 year old Ryobeat, after being knocked to Loser’s Round 1, swept through the lower half of the bracket, defeating OTG, Slox and Zanguzen, walking home with a 5th place finish. Zhu managed to take a game off of the Swede himself in Winner’s Finals, spurred on by the thought of massive Uniqlo hauls. Though Leffen did take the set, the highly technical and fast paced games were the highlight of the day.
The eSports man of the hour was able to take the gold with out dropping a single set. Despite this flawless win, Tristate proved how much it’s leveled up and how far it can go. Keep your eyes trained on this revived hotbed of Melee.

High School Smash (72 Singles Entrants) – 3/28/2015, South Pasadena, CA

HSSmash

HSS March 28th was High School Smash’s (HSS) first event, and it featured high schooler only brackets for both Melee and Smash 4 Singles and Doubles. Over 100 high schoolers from SoCal came, and even a few from San Diego. The first installment of High School Smash on March 28th will hopefully be the start of a new monthly tournament series in SoCal, specially for high school smashers!
For those unaware, High School Smash is an organization dedicated to introducing more high schoolers to the smash scene and promoting its growth. In addition to hosting these monthly tournaments, we also have crew battle brackets similarly to The Melee Games (where we got the idea from).

Smash im Pott 2! (52 Singles Entrants) – 3/28/2015, Duisburg, Germany

The second edition of “Smash im Pott!” just like the last one marks the first national tournament of the year for Germany. While we had lots of smaller & middle scaled tournaments already, this one was about to be the decisive confrontation of Germanys finest in Melee (& Project: M) on a national scale. With Ice not being able to attend, because of a 60 person limit which was met within hours, the first place wasn’t set in stone from the beginning, so everybody who want’s to leave his name ontop of the results-list had a decently fair shot with reaper & Däumling being the favorites.
The tournament saw a whole lot of upsets with ProsmasherTim taking out Blaze who recently beat Däumling twice at a local event in Bielefeld, MISTRRLOVE knocking pheX & Usleon into losers bracket early & eliminating Dr. Dead in losers quarters, Tero eliminating pheX from the tournament, Snex beating Yomi & Däumling taking winners finals over reaper in a clutch 3:2 set, only to lose 0-6 to reaper in grands. Timi coming from Vienna, Austria coming back to Duisburg to face some old demons, this time overcoming Usleon in losers quarters & proceeding to take 3rd place. Upsets everywhere was this weekends motto.
We also got the fifth edition of Kiw1 (Kevin Spacie) vs Tizi (ProsmasherTim) – the best of seven money match series that generates more hype than anything in Germany. Both guys decided to think a little bit out of the box for this one, when Kiw1 offered a new deal. A houndred Euros for Tizi if he wins, thirty Euros for Kiw1 if he wins but the loser has to eat a huge salami pizza anyway, which gave Tizi a little extra motivation, since he lives vegan for year now. It showed that that motivation boost helped him to clutch it out in the end & he took it over Kiw1 4:3 as clutch as always.

Passion for Smashin (22 Singles Entrants) – 3/28/2015, Bradford, Pa

Passion for Smashin was a call to the regions around Bradford to come and test Bradford’s new smash scene, and they did. We had players from Jamestown, Buffalo, and Fredonia come out and smash. These guys did more then test Bradford’s players, they crushed them. Every player from Bradford was knocked out for last but one, which placed 9th overall. Jamestown was also only able to get as high as 9th place overall. Top 8 consisted of Buffalo and Fredonia players, with winners side consisting of only Buffalo. The trend of Buffalo being on top didn’t end, with top 4 being all Buffalo players. Something else to point out, there were a decent amount of fox/falcos in top 8, but only one out placed the Zelda, Link, Roy, and Jiggs.

High School Smash – March 28th (45 Singles Entrants) – 3/28/2015, South Pasadena, CA

MoJoe from Temecula was the favorite to win for this tournament, as he was previously power ranked in Brawl, and had won several Smash 4 events before. Not many other well-known Smash 4 players were known, with the exception of Void from Fusion Academy.

Both MoJoe and Void easily fought their way through to winners’ finals, with neither dropping a single game. Void ended up beating MoJoe 3-1, who would be hungry for revenge in the near future. In Losers’, Luck7 from CAMS (California Academy of Math and Science) beat jose v 2-1, and faced MoJoe in Losers’ Finals. Luck7 fell 1-3 to MoJoe, who once again played Void. MoJoe reset the bracket by beatin void 3-2, and then swiftly took the tournament by winning the second set 3-0.

Smash 4’s top 16 seemed to be more spread out, though several schools such as Servite, CAMS, Yorba Linda HS, Riverside and Arroyo all had 2 or more smashers in the Top 16 bracket.
