Do You Fox Wit It (230 Singles Entrants) – 11/15/2014, Oakland, CA

Do Yo Fox Wit it was the NorCal installment of the Apex 2015 World Qualifiers, featuring an abundance of high level talent, as well as one of the first Smash 4 3ds tournies held at a major West Coast event. In addition to most of the finest players in NorCal and SoCal, the event saw a very strong group of players from outside of the state with Mew2King, Hax, SilentWolf, Colbol, Flash, and Doh all attending. The event was sponsored by Twitch and Smashlounge and was streamed by ShowdownSmash. Recordings can be found on youtube.com/showdowngg.

Each event saw some action on day one. The first round of Melee Singles’ pools whittled the 218 player field to 72 players and the doubles bracket– consisting of 50 entrants– progressed to the final 8 teams. Smash 4 for 3ds was played until its conclusion, with Mew2King emerging victorious from the 34 player field, defeating Nanerz (2nd) and Sean (3rd). In what turned out to be a preview of the next day’s top 8, day one concluded with an exhibition fox round robin featuring Hax, SFAT, Lucky, Fiction, SilentWolf, and Colbol. Hax ultimately defeated SFAT, sweeping the round robin and gaining ownership of both a falcon and fox round robin victory.

Day two saw a number of upsets and near upsets in doubles and singles. In arguably the most entertaining set of the tournament, PewFat upset Mew2King and Hax 3-2, demonstrating impressive synergy and devastating team combos in the process. In the other semifinal Mango and Lucky narrowly defeated MacD and Fiction 3-2, with Mango opting to use Jigglypuff. Pewfat would fall 3-2 in Winners’ Finals to Mango and Lucky. Relegated to the Losers’ bracket, Mew2King and Hax edged out a 3-2 win versus Alan and Shroomed in Losers’ Semifinals, after which they convincingly defeated PewFat and Losers’ Finals. They carried this momentum into Grand Finals, forcing Mango to switch to fox after a quick reset, and ultimately defeated Mango and Lucky 3-1 to take home the doubles crown.

The singles bracket featured a number of exciting matchups and great sets. Lord again demonstrated his creativity in an exciting finish against Flash, who showed throughout the weekend that his skills are on par with the best America can offer. However, the results of the singles’ bracket can be summarized by referring to the– unexpectedly appropriate– name of this tournament. Despite a very deep talent pool that included a number of fox slayers this group of voracious vulpines would not be denied, transforming the singles bracket into an extension of the previous night’s exhibition and bringing the fears of fox hating stream monsters to fruition. SilentWolf defeated Mew2King in round 2 of winners, after which Fiction dispatched him from the tournament in round 3 of losers, sending Mew2King to his lowest placing in years. Undeterred by his performance in the fox round robin, SilentWolf defeated SFAT and Lucky in Winners’ bracket, after which he lost a very tight set to Hax in Winners’ Finals. SFAT defated Fiction, Colbol, and Lucky before falling 3-0 to SilentWolf en route to a third place finish. In Grand Finals Hax again defeated SilentWolf 3-2, thereby sweeping doubles and singles.

House of Paign II (40 Singles Entrants) – 11/17/2014, Champaign, Illinois

The University of Illinois hosted it’s second of the new tournament series “House of Paign”, featuring Melee Singles, Doubles, Project M, and Smash 4. While attendance wavered compared to the prior tournament with midterms on the horizon and cold weather freezing some smasher’s hands, several regional players from out of state dodged the nerf gun war happening in the hallways and made it to another exciting tournament. The story of the day was Marth, Falco, and Captain Falcon, with Matt R carrying on the Midwest’s Falcon heritage to get vengeance against Bert|7ent for his brother. Golden boy PRZ placed lower than he expected, so prepare for him to hit back hard in his trip in next month’s House of Paign.

Coffeeshop 2 (27 Singles Entrants) – 11/15/2014, Chagrin Falls, OH

A new Ohio monthly started this weekend. It’s small size and new venue gave a very relaxed atmosphere with plenty of time for friendlies. The tournament was extremely successful given the attendees only had one week’s notice. Big surprises include Pittsburgh Rank 2 player Taki placing 4th due to his choice of going all Ganon. And the biggest upset coming from Ashtabula native Sweet taking a win in losers finals over his doubles partner S1. Though nothing could stop Ohio favorite 4% from running straight through winners to take the tournament.

START 7 (24 Singles Entrants) – 11/15/2014, Rotterdam

In preperation for Avalon VI, which takes place the 29th of November, Guus hosted the 7th edition in the START series, a typical grassroot series of living room events beloved for it’s joyfull yet competitive atmosphere. Earlier editions didn’t always bring in the top players. This event was different though, Aside from a healthy group of new comers it also featured a unusual strong turnout of top player and a tough bracket. Amsah, Adam, Remen, Ser and Faab battled for the top spots with a surprising upset by Jimmy, knocking LLL.Remen into losers bracket early on which sadly wasn’t recored. Some other very tense sets were recorded though and your recommended to watch Adam vs Amsah, Remen vs Adam and Amsah vs Remen in particular to see who came out on top.
We closed the day with a exciting 1 stock tournament with plenty of upsets, right Amsah đŸ˜‰ *cough G&W cough*.
