Summary
It’s been quite a journey for Leffen who was called a “god-slayer” as early as 2014. In 2015, he’s climbed several mountains. He won his first major at BEAST 5, defeating Mango and Armada. At Apex, he beat Mew2King and became the first ever player to defeat the “5 gods” and also shares the title for “most money won from a single money match.” His early successes were met with some struggles in the spring season, where he failed to make Top 8 at Press Start, losing to players such as SFAT and HugS. After the disappointing performance, he came back and took the summer by storm, winning 4 out of 5 events, including CEO 2015. He’s been rapidly improving in his weaker matchups, demonstrating a complete mastery against Marth by dominating Mew2King at Super Smash Con with two consecutive Fox vs. Marth victories on Final Destination – something never achieved by a Fox ever.

Can’t wait to see the huge jump in numbers between Armada and Leffen :/
Why is leffen not number one? He won four out of five of the majors. Armada may have won evo, but he did it without playing anyone he wasn’t expected to beat. I don’t understand how winning evo beats 4 majors from leffen. I am not trying to be rude, but quite frankly this list seems so biased. Leffen has proven to be better than armada this summer. That is a fact.
‘This Summer’ This isn’t just about this Summer, it’s the entirety of 2015 so far, where Armada has better results than Leffen. I also love how when Mang0 wins an EVO, It’s considered an incredible achievement, when Armada wins one. ‘It’s not worth too much’
Because Mango actually beat PPMD and HBox while they were still real players as well as Armada. Armada beat a virtual retiree and some asshole who wont sit down.
Looking at from B.E.A.S.T 5 onward and only counting tournaments they have both attended, Armada has more 1st place wins (6 total vs Leffen’s 4) and has only 1 5th place compared to Leffen’s 3 5th place wins (Leffen got 3rd at that one tournament as well). Armada’s continued consistency in placing high in tournaments is why he is ranked higher.
Alternatively, Armada outplaced him at 2 out of the 3 super-majors, and has winning records against Mango and Hungrybox—which Leffen does not. Armada also is even in sets against PPMD this year while Leffen lost to him. So Armada has done better against 3/4 of the other “gods” and has won 2/3 of the most important tournaments.
It’s close. You can spin these results any way you want.
For one primary reason, this isn’t the Summer MIOM Ranking, its the 2015 MIOM Ranking. It includes the Summer but it’s not only the Summer. Everything this year is taken into account.
Leffen and Armada remind me of Armada/Mango last year. Mango was undoubtedly the best last year… however, something some people don’t know is that despite Mango’s dominance, Armada was up in set count against him, similar to how Leffen is up against Armada this year in the H2H. Like Leffen this year, Armada had some pretty big wins last year such as CEO, Super Sweet, SSS, SoM V. However, despite all that Mango was still the clear #1 last year like Armada is #1 this year [albeit to a lesser extent. Leffen is closer then Armada was to Mango last year] – Nobody was saying Mango wasn’t the best because of losing the set count last year, therefore nobody should be saying it about Armada this year. Armada losing in one particular H2H isn’t everything when he pretty much has Leffen beat in every other area from placements at the biggest tournaments, records against the top-6, not losing to non top 6 players and overall consistency.
The three Super Nationals this year: EVO, Apex and CEO in order of importance and prestige.
Leffen
EVO: 5th
Apex: 3rd
CEO: 1st
Armada
EVO: 1st
Apex: 2nd
CEO: 2nd
I don’t know about anyone else, but that in combination with other factors screams #1 to me. Not to mention he has also won majors such as: MVG Sandstorm, McSmashter and ESPECIALLY I’m Not Yelling. I think many overlook Armada’s victory at I’m Not Yelling. It was a bigger tournament then either WTFox or FCReturn [had more entrants, more stacked with more players from the top 20, more international representation. MIOM members were basically calling it a mini-national]
When you take those wins and combine it with the fact that Armada doesn’t lose to players considered below his level like SFAT, Plup, HugS and Axe… when you combine it with the fact that Armada has a better total record against the rest of the top 6… when you combine it with the fact that Armada isn’t getting 9th at majors… it becomes pretty easy to give him the #1 spot. At least for me.
This is an excellent post and should be required reading for anyone with even a hint of a doubt about Armada > Leffen in the first half of 2015.
While Leffen normally beats armada he is still ranked #2 because Armada performs significantly better against the other top players compared to leffen. They are both very close however
Is anyone else super surprised by Leffen’s stage results? He always counterpicks to FD but the stats say it isn’t a great stage for him. Surprised to see the most victories coming from Yoshi’s.
Frankly, I look at how the gods stack up against each other as much as I look at placings. Placings have a lot to do with who you had to play.
mango>leffen
mango>m2k

mango ? PP

leffen > armada
leffen > m2k
leffen = hbox
hbox > PP
hbox > m2k
If Leffen had an outright advantage over hbox, I’d feel comfortable putting him at #2. As it stands, the only person who has as many advantages among the gods as mango is armada.
leffen doesn’t win a single tourny with all the big 5 present…
Why teh fuck is he second?
Worse ranking against Armada, Mango, PPMD loses to HBOX
Top 5 should be
1. Armada
2. PPMD
3. Leffen/MANGO
5. HBOX
6. M2K
1. Armada
2. Mango
3. HBOX
4. Leffen
5. M2k
6. PPMD
