Summary
|
||||
2015 has been a difficult year for the Mango Nation. After a year where The Kid could not have been more dominant, Joseph “Mango” Marquez started off 2015 in rough shape. High on hubris and standing up for his friend Chillindude after the latter’s vicious 5-0 defeat at the hands of Leffen, Mango lost a $1000 money match against the Swedish Fox main at Apex 2015. Later in the tournament, he was nearly eliminated by aMSa and ended up getting 3-0’d by Armada, losing two games to his new Fox. Although he was mostly in good spirits about it at the time, this set the tone to a disappointing year for the previous number 1 player in the world.
There were flashes of hope in the first half of the year with his performances at I’m Not Yelling, Press Start, and the Australian tournament BAM 7, but by the time summer came around, it seemed the rest of the field had caught up. Mango found dangerous new enemies in Plup, Westballz, and Leffen, who collectively took nine sets from him this year, and experienced his worst ever year against Armada, finishing 2015 with a 2-7 record in sets with him. His fans all hoped that he would pull it together for EVO, telling themselves that Mango could win any tournament that he wanted. With a win at EVO 2015, Mango would have joined Marvel vs. Capcom legend Justin Wong as only the second person to win three consecutive EVOs, but on the eve of top 8, he was sent to loser’s bracket by Plup and looked shaky against Druggedfox. The next day, in front of Melee’s largest audience and a ballroom packed with people shouting his name, Mango’s reign officially fell at the hands of Hungrybox, an old rival with whom Mango had an incredible 25-5 set record against at nationals. A stunned crowd watched as Mango threw himself off the edge multiple times and gave up his crown in the process.
Losing to Hungrybox wasn’t an isolated incident, either. He dropped another set to him at The Big House 5, where he also lost to Mew2King and placed 4th. Even with impressive performances at Paragon Los Angeles, Smash Summit, and WTFox, Mango has let the rest of the field catch up, and now he’s struggling against players whom he destroyed as recently as a year ago. With claims that he’s dropping Fox in favor of being a solo Falco main again (even playing a set as Falco against Armada’s Peach, his first since Genesis I), it remains to be seen what lies in store for the kid in 2016. We know he’s been humbled, we know he’s hungry for it, and we also know he’s still capable. All that remains is for him to prove it.

Top 3 order Prediction
3.Leffen
2.Hungrybox
1.Armada
I love how press start is included in “flashes of hope”. It rivals PPMD’s apex run. Mango beat jace, hbox, lucky, axe, fly aminita , shroomed, leffen , hax , westballz and axe. It is a notable tournament.
After last year I think the mango nation would have collectively slapped you if you said Mango was going to go even in sets with Hungrybox and lose sets to every player in the top 10 that he played.
Very true. I don’t think anyone saw him losing 4 sets to westballz, 2 sets to plup or ever losing to a pikachu or worse of all, going even with Hbox. I think that’s got to be the biggest disappointment to mang0. Before he knew that if he ran into Hbox it was a win, now it’s a coin flip. At least the good thing is I’d say that the reason mang0 hasn’t been as dominant isn’t just because he’s not as good, it’s because everyone else has improved so much. Players like plup, west and even shroomed are capable of playing on a level that can cause upsets to the top 6-2. Armada still remains unbeatable for anyone outside of leffen, Hbox and potentially mang0/PP. Really hope to see mang0 ride again next year overcoming this years slump being top2 and an extremely threatening contender for 1st with all of the top 6 joining him.
Can’t wait to see #3 and #2. I’d guess it’s and be extremely skeptical if it wasn’t, Hbox at #3 and leffen at #2. Hbox had some good performances but leffen has just been consistent for 90% of the year even without being able to attend TBH5 and summit. Guess well see what tomorrow holds. 🙂
Sad nation… Mango went from being best in the world for 2 years straight to being worse than Leffen and hbox. RIP MaNg0 Nation.
So the top three are going to be HBox, Armada, and Borp right?
