Summary
|
||||
2015 has been a rather quiet year for Kevin “PPMD” Nanney. Coming off of some health issues in 2014, the North Carolina resident showcased his excellent Falco and Marth gameplay in only four tournaments this year, but his results at those tournaments were impressive enough to warrant the title of sixth best player of 2015. Starting the year off in an exciting way, he managed an incredible performance at Apex 2015, defeating Wizzrobe, S2J, PewPewU, and Leffen, and taking two out of three sets against Armada to win what was then the largest Melee tournament ever. After such an impressive performance, many thought 2015 could prove to be PPMD’s year.
Unfortunately, his health issues persisted and he didn’t attend another tournament until EVO 2015, nearly six months later. At EVO, he again proved his worth, beating HugS, SFAT, and Plup to make it all the way to Winners’ Finals. However, he struggled against Armada once he got there, losing 3-0 in three close games. In Losers’ Finals against Hungrybox, he again lost 3-0 to take 3rd place. From there, PPMD disappeared again, only re-emerging four months later to take a dominant first place at Canada Cup 2015 over RaynEX, Ryan Ford, and Duck.
A week later he attended Smash Summit, his final tournament of 2015. Over the Summit weekend, he seemed to be struggling to keep up his energy, losing in several exhibition matches to players considered to be below him in skill. However, he also seemed to improve every day, and by the time bracket rolled around on Saturday, he pulled it together to defeat Swedish Delight and Westballz to arrive at Winners’ Semis against Armada. The Swede once again knocked PPMD into Losers’, this time winning the set 3-1. In Losers’ Quarters, he faced off against Plup in a rematch from EVO. This time Plup put up a fight, taking PPMD to game 5 and managing to clutch it out to pull off the upset and knock PPMD out at 5th.
Although some might be somewhat disappointed in PPMD’s performance over his few appearances in the second half of 2015, we remain confident in the Good Doctor’s play. He has showed his ability to keep up with the best players and remain a major threat in bracket despite not attending nearly as many tournaments as his competition. His elegant neutral game and championship mentality mark PPMD as not only a player to be feared and respected, but also one of the highest level competitors in Melee. We can’t wait to see what he brings to the table in 2016.

PPMD should actually be number 4 this year. He won a tournament where all 6 gods were present and got 3rd at the other one. That is incredibly impressive. The only other players that have similar 2015’s are Armada (1), Leffen (2) and Hungrybox (3). I believe PPMD is better than Mango and M2K this year.
As far as his legacy goes: Since his rise to god-status, you can count the number of non-gods to take a tournament set from PPMD on one hand. PPMD has consistently placed in the top 5 in every tournament he’s attended since winning Pound V (sans Genesis II). No other player remains as consistent as PPMD except for Armada. I’d say he’s the 3rd best player in the modern era behind Mango and Armada.
I love how press start is included in “flashes of hope”. It rivals PPMD’s apex run. Mango beat jace, hbox, lucky, axe, fly aminita , shroomed, leffen , hax , westballz and axe. It is a notable tournament.

What 大貫妙子 said. I would place 4th or 5th. But glad to see him up here regardless Kreygasm
Yeah it happened again, where PPMD places way higher than his rating on the MIOM top 100, but we never get to see him play :/
I really hope he can fix any mental health issues he has been having and show us all how to play marth correctly again haha, and I miss the bird dude, though he told me “the beak is at its peak,” but I don’t know if I believe him.
Why don’t Silent Wolf and Hax get punished for inactivity whereas PPMD does?
