Welcome to another yearly edition of SSBMRank! This year we are “powered by HTC”. They have provided us several resources to make this year’s production values better than ever. We also couldn’t have done this without the countless volunteers that helped with voting, blurb-writing, fact-finding, taking pictures, and editing.
To recap a few things, this is not a solo project. We have asked panelists from all across the world to rate players. Voters rated players based on the following criterion:
Given the quality and quantity of work in 2015, if everyone entered 100 tournaments, who on average would place the best?
The players were sorted based on average rating with the lowest and highest ratings taken out to reduce variance.
Without further ado, let’s get to the rankings!

Noted doubles specialist Landon ‘DoH’ Cox was more active on Twitter than he was in singles this year. Yet, the D.C. resident showed that his rushdown Peach style is far from obsolete with a top 64 placing at The Big House 5.

Jason “Bizzarro Flame” Yoon is widely considered to be one of the best Ganondorf players in the world, second only to Kage the Warrior. He has a dedicated fanbase that’s always waiting for his next stylish Gfycat. 2015 was a big year for him: he eviscerated Eikelmann in a Salty Suite match at Apex 2015, placed 25th and took a game off Armada at I’m Not Yelling!, and turned his notoriety into a sponsorship with Team YP.

Jack ‘Crush’ Hoyt, a New Englander still in high school, is on the MIOMRank Top 100 for the first time after making vast improvements to his smash game in 2015. He’s climbed the local PR, bringing his flashy fox to Boston locals and raking in wins against NE’s best. He also had impressive bracket placements at Super Smash Con and EVO 2015. Even though he’s one of the youngest top players in the scene, don’t let his age fool you — this kid is good.

Rob “OkamiBW” Schueller is a Sheik main from San Diego, California. He didn’t have a very active 2015, but he placed well at the two majors he attended, finishing 17th at Press Start (beating Fiction) and 33rd at EVO 2015 (beating Matt). He has solid fundamentals and a knack for exploiting the best qualities of Sheik as a character. He’s also an important figure in the development of the metagame — for a long time, Tempo | Axe was OkamiBW’s practice partner, and together the two of them popularized shield dropping.

Because he didn’t travel much in 2015, many seem to have forgotten about Marth main Imadh “IB” Bedri. He has always been one of Canada’s finest, and he had a solid 2015 to back that up. Though absent from most big events, he did well at large Canadian tournaments, such as McSmashter 4, where he placed 9th and won doubles with [A] | Armada. IB plays a dashdance-heavy game and opts to go for flashy, crowdpleasing combos.

VS | Porkchops is currently ranked #1 in South Florida. The Falco main put himself on the map last year when he upset aMSa in pools at CEO 2014. This year, after a solid 33rd place finish at Paragon Orlando and a disappointing Apex 2015, Porkchops caught the attention of people once again by placing 9th at the North Carolina regional, Bad Moon Rising. He turned in another solid performance at CEO 2015, placing 25th, and almost pulled another upset at EVO 2015, where he lost a very close set to Ice.

Even though Phil “Phil” DeBerry is best known for his “non-eSports” commentary with fellow NorCal resident Homemadewaffles, he has proven himself to be a strong player. In 2015, he had multiple strong placings at national events including 33rd at HTC Throwdown and 49th at both I’m Not Yelling and The Big House 5. In addition to his competitive exploits this year, Phil was able to attend and commentate at Smash Summit through money raised in the event’s donation drive.

New England’s best Peach, James ‘Mafia’ Lauerman, has climbed the PR of the often underrated region with consistent wins at a large number of Massachussets locals and NE regionals. Long on the come-up, his precise turnip game, spacing, and tech skill have pushed him to the top of the highly active Boston scene.

yo everything past the #20-16 is incorrectly labeled as 2015. Guess those results are already out 😉
Why is Toph so low? Just looking at his placings, he looks like he did pretty well this year. Especially compared to everyone else on this part of the list. How do you guys rank this?
Toph should be a top 50 player. 65-17-65-49-NA These rankings are ridiculous. Whoever the panel was for this list doesn’t look like they even tried.
To Brian…I just wanted to remind you that because he got 65th at a tourney doesnt make him the 65th best player in the world…likewise getting 17th doesnt make him the 17th best player in the world. Not every player in the world attends these tournies all at one time. If EVERYONE significant showed up to Apex, would he still have gotten 65th? Likewise is EVERYONE significant showed up to CEO, would he have still gotten 17th? The answer is, most likely not. While I agree with you that Toph should be ranked higher, putting him as a top 50 player is a huge stretch.
65+17+65+49 divided by 4 = 49
Remember that 8 players get 17th, 16 get 49th, and either 16 or 32 get 65th. So that method definitely does not work. Also, it’s about who you beat, not just placings.
Agreed, I don’t see toph being anywhere above top 85 in any world. Saying that he is a top 50 player when he didn’t have to face off against anyone from europe japan or even some people from other places in the US is silly
To Bryan… 1v1 me kid
Salty enough to resort to a 1v1 in a blog argument?
Personally I think the only person who should move up is okami but he didn’t go to enough tourneys to warrant that
Toph is underrated but the only two premier tournaments this year he placed tied for 65th-96th. I’m not sure how you get from top 96 at a the biggest tournaments to top 50 in the world.
*top 80
I’m laughing my ass of at your username
Two premier tournaments? Wtf are you talking about? There were five super majors listed above And he didn’t get 96th at any of them. Are you retarded?
Self corrected already, he tied for 65th-80th at the apex and evo, the tournaments with the most talent this year. Like I said, he’s underrated but putting him at top 50 makes me laugh
Great analysis so far, looking like there are lots of changes already! I can’t wait for the rest.
It’s good to see captain smuckers on here tri state ftw
btw is anyone creeped out by Okami? no one can possibly be as happy as he looks in that picture
Toph really should be higher. He’s got good placings and he’s ranked highly in a really tough region.
another toph-related comment…top_bbq
Toph has higher placements than everyone on here, he should be higher. Maybe 80s-70s range
Toph is as underrated as HugS is overrated 4Head
You guys should add some quick breakdowns about the players’ playstyle like they did for SF4 Capcom Cup! For example S2J: punish game / reactionary / can’t edgeguard lol
What time do you upload the next wave of top 100 each time
Any chance we can get an elaboration on DoH being below CaptainSmuckers? The results listed seem to show DoH having a better year, so I’m curious what else went into the decision.
