Big things are brewing in the state of Puebla, Mexico, where the largest and most important Latin American tournament is going to take place from July 24th to 26th. In just about 3 years, Smash Factor has grown from a grassroots tournament, held at the TO’s house, to a respected international event hosted in the nicest venue in town, with important sponsors and big names participating across a variety of fighting games including all variations of Smash (yes, even PM!), Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Ultra Street Fighter 4.
Antonio “Citi” Vargas, founder of Smash Factor, explained to us the details of how his organization is becoming an established event. “The community is the key factor. We are a community-driven event and the love for this game has taken us to this point. We will be hosting the biggest and most important tournament to date.”
This time around though, it’s not just the Smash community supporting their tourney. “Sponsors are playing an important role this year. We have the support of MVG, MadCatz, AverMedia, and of course Tecnologico de Monterrey.” Tec de Monterrey, one of Mexico’s most respected universities, will be providing the venue this year. “We will have the capacity to run four streams with no problem.”
Antonio has really big things planned for the main event, but in traditional Mexican fashion, fun is guaranteed even if you’re not in the venue. “We have rented out a hotel just for the players, food and transportation to the main venue is included in the package, and we will be hosting a poolside salty suite with many setups. It’s great to see players from all over Mexico and other countries coming together and having fun. We Mexicans are very friendly and warm people, we like to take care of our guests and make sure they have a great time. It will be a real party.”
The event will be stacked with very well known players. MVG’s support includes the attendance of their most emblematic character, Mew2King. M2K is not a stranger to this event, this will be his third time attending. We just hope he doesn’t try to SD off the stage IRL this time around. Axe will also be attending (Pikachu hype!), as well as Ally, Mr R, Javi and many others. Street Fighter pro GamerBee and Marvel’s prodigy ApologyMan are also in the roster. Smash Factor as a brand is branching out, and has started sponsoring their own team of players to travel around Mexico for events, and even some international ones.
All-inclusive packages (lodging, food, transportation from the airport to hotel and venue) start at around $85.00, which is a total steal. You can find out more about their event by visiting their webpage or the FB fan page.
Mexico, cerveza, high-level smash, and Latinas. Sounds like the Summer of Smash just found its fun cousin.
