Last weekend, the MLG action moved to the west coast in sunny San Diego with Pat’s House 2. Powerhouses, Curse.Hungrybox and P4K EMP Mew2King, were both in attendance at this qualifier. The west coast players came in full force and the main question on people’s minds was whether someone could stand up to these powerhouses and upset them in singles.
Day 1
Day 1 featured multiple rounds of singles pools. Round 1 had 24 pools of 6-7 players each with the top 3 advancing into the next round. Many of the top players went through their first pools unscathed, but there were also a handful of small upsets. gAR from Norcal ended up beating CT|Zero in a close last-match last-hit set to take the #1 seed going into round 2.
Later in the day, round 2 pools would feature many intense matches between many of California’s finest players. Some interesting results included Fly_Amanita beating MIOM|PewPewU to avenge his loss at Kings of Cali and MIOM|Tafokints upsetting Westballz to obtain a first seed. Curse.Hungrybox also fended off the Cali Foxes, defeating MIOM|SFAT and Lucky, to obtain a coveted 1st seed.
Day 2
Day 2 featured several interesting matches in the stacked 32-man bracket. In winner’s, Lucky would end up defeating MMG|Shroomed and MIOM|SFAT before falling to heavy favorite P4K Mew2king in Winner’s Semis. On the other side of the bracket, Crs.HungryBox blitzed through winner’s defeating Eddy Mexico, Westballz, and Fly Amanita to advance to winner’s finals.
Meanwhile in the loser’s bracket, there were several intense matches that occurred early in bracket with MMG|Shroomed eliminating s2j in round 3. Norcal favorites, MMG|Shroomed, and MIOM|PewPewU, saw their runs in loser’s end quickly, placing 7th and 9th respectively. For the top 8, Westballz ended up defeating Lucky in 5 back-n-forth matches and Fly Amanita would also end up eliminating MIOM|SFAT in a 5 game set.
For 4th place, in the most exciting set of the day, Westballz was on the verge of victory against his nemesis, Fly Amanita, in an exciting 5 game set. On the last stock on Pokemon Stadium, Westballz went for a suicide dair spike on Fly. Unfortunately for Westballz, his Falco landed the backwards hitbox, sending Fly back on stage and giving him the victory instead.
In winner’s finals, P4K Mew2king’s methodical approach to fighting against Jigglypuff proved too much for Curse.Hungrybox to handle. M2K would end up defeating Hungrybox in 4 games, sending him to loser’s to face Fly. Unfortunately for Fly, Hungrybox’s relentless aerial movement overwhelmed Fly as he won swiftly in 3 games.
In grand finals, P4K Mew2king’s strategy proved once against to be too much as he won 3-1, redeeming his loss from GOML, the previous MLG qualifier.

I only mention this because I love Melee and really appreciate and enjoy MIOM, but you guys really should have someone proofread and edit your articles. Even a few instances of poor grammar and sentence structure detract from the legitimacy otherwise found at MIOM. Great job with what you guys are doing though!
Also, I may be wrong, but I thought I heard westballz say during interview that he’d intended to bair and not dair at the end, which I think is worth mentioning. Or I’m just a huge westballz fan 😡
Thanks for the feedback. It’s been tough for me to cram 5 articles in a week by myself =/. Westballz did mention that he wanted a bair in my interview with him, but from watching the video, I’m having a hard time believing this based on the positioning.
Yeah I didn’t really see a bair either…but I want to believe!! Haha.
Thanks for taking my feedback so well by the way. I’d love to see MIOM grow and was worried that I’d be shot down as a grammar Nazi. If you guys are busy and need/want help, maybe you could get an editor? I volunteer! My editing skills are better than my Melee skills! :p
I love the article! I do think the crew battle is worth a mention though! 🙂
