June is historically a decent month for Melee; it has produced 11 tourneys of 100+ entrants all-time going into 2015, despite an epic drought of 0 such tourneys between 2009-2013. Last year was easily the best June on record with two tourneys of 200+ entrants, and this year looks to be similar.
Last month was an excellent May for the books. BAM 7 topped all Melee tourneys with 261 entrants, shattering the previous Australian Melee turnout record and becoming the biggest-ever Melee tourney outside of North America or Europe. A big shoutout to the entire Australian scene for making it happen by flying in several top out-of-continent players.
Apologies for the delay on posting this June preview!

Mayhem June 2015 takes place this weekend. If this article had been posted a week ago, it would have been filled with wrong predictions, as upsets ruled the day at the latest installment. Posthumous recap of the event: SoCal Melee has officially kicked off a new era of superlocals, Mango remains immune to being overthrown by the upset-hungry HugS and MacD, and Westballz will be a force to be reckoned with during this year’s edition of the summer of Smash. Prediction: 200 entrants.
Torneio Maroto do Smash no Sitio also takes place this weekend all the way over in Brazil. Originally SFAT was to fly down to attend the event, but visa documentation complications prevented that from happening. Despite the unfortunate circumstance there, the South American scene has come together for a great turnout, with the best players in Brazil, Chile, Peru, and neighboring countries duking it out in Rio de Janeiro. Prediction: 90 entrants.

Smash n Splash takes place this weekend. The originally-imposed entrants cap of 350 unique attendees was expanded to 500, which has now been reached yet again. The waterpark venue gives this tourney a new spin, appeasing to Smashers who want something more than just a sea of CRT TVs in their tourney experience. Even with PM and Smash 4 present, Melee has managed to create the biggest turnout at the tourney, with top players such as Plup, Wizzrobe, Kels, Dart, Darkrain, and more confirmed. Prediction: 250 entrants.
Defend This House also takes place this weekend. Westballz will be flying into Maryland to invade the Xanadu venue that stream viewers have come to know and love on the VGBootCamp channel. With Nintendude out of town in Europe, the rest of MD/VA will be given the unenviable task of trying to defend its region against the man who double-eliminated Mango just last week. Prediction: 110 entrants.

CEO 2015 hits the headlines on the final weekend of June, hosted by famous tournament organizer Alex Jebailey. What was previously an FGC-exclusive tourney a few years ago has recently developed into one of Smash’s annual majors, as top Melee figureheads confirmed include Armada, Leffen, Hungrybox, Mew2King, Plup, Colbol, PewPewU, SFAT, Scar, Toph, Azen, and too many others to name. With over 300 entries currently registered for both Melee and Smash 4 (the two biggest turnouts of any games at CEO) this year’s installment will be jam-packed with Smash getting its own 10,000 sq ft ballroom. By the time reg ends, CEO could climb as high as 7th on the all-time list of biggest Melee tourneys ever. Prediction: 370 entrants.
See you next month.

There’s actually a really big Oregon event Ft. M2k and the Pacific Northwest’s best (minus silent wolf and vish).
