I want to use this blog post to introduce The Big House Compendium! I previously talked about Melee Singles capping, and its consequences on The Big House 5 registration season in this blog post. Read below to find out how the Compendium is going to change the game for us this year!
Q: What is The Big House Compendium?

A: The Big House Compendium is a library of Smash content that individuals can unlock through different levels of donations, all of which go towards the content creators, event production costs, good player funds, and prize pool bonuses. These donations will be rewarded with various tourney additions and spectator content, which get unlocked piece by piece as stretch goals are met.

Our main goal with the Compendium is to allow spectators to feel like active participants of TBH5 even without attending the event in person. For a long time, those who couldn’t attend a Smash major have mostly been relegated to the sidelines, with just a stream and social media at their fingertips. We want to provide an upgraded platform for spectator participation in the form of an incentivized donation drive, artist eShop, regional crews vote, fantasy draft contest, and brackets portal that comprises what we call the Compendium, subsequently drumming up more interest and discussion surrounding the tourney.

If you want another person’s take on what the Compendium concept means, check out this great post on Reddit by -Dubious-!

Q: Is this going to be like the Dota 2 Compendium?

A: That was an inspiration, of course, but we are obviously on a much smaller scale and we don’t have the luxury of being able to provide in-game content additions. Our main goal is to enable spectator participation. Our main goal is not to bolster the prize pool to ridiculous levels, although that is a possible side effect for the future if this project turns out to be successful. At the end of the day, we want The Big House Compendium to be proof of concept for future grassroots Smash majors, as TOs begin to leverage the exponentially-growing spectator base more effectively to provide a better tourney experience for everyone involved.

Q: How do I participate?

A: Go here to participate in The Big House Compendium, hosted by smash.gg!

Q: When will the entry caps be raised?

A: They will be raised +128 entrants at a time, shortly after the corresponding Compendium goals are met each time.

If you haven’t registered yet, pay attention to the current Compendium level and be prepared to register at our smash.gg page.

If you already registered and wish to add an event as soon as the entry cap is raised, go to your Manage Registration section and click Update Registration to add an event.

Q: How does the regional crew battle work?

A: We are running the biggest regional crews tourney ever at TBH5! The number of crews participating and the level of prize pool is up to the Compendium donors, as detailed on the page. We’ve selected several regional crews that represent the best talent among the turnout composition at TBH5, and only some of them will make it into the tourney. For every +$5 you spend within the Compendium, you get +1 vote for your favorite regional crew, which helps them get into the eventual tourney lineup.

Q: When does the Compendium end?

A: The donation drive is scheduled to end on September 12th, with a stretch goal potentially adding more time to the donation drive if it is reached.

Q: When will the Artist eShop be available?

A: September 10! We are still collecting information from different sources and putting together the eShop, so look for it next week.

Q: When will Fantasy Smash be available?

A: September 20! This is several days after tournament registration ends, since creating a fantasy roster requires all singles entrants to be confirmed and available to view.

If you’re as excited about The Big House 5 as I am, join the social media discussion! This year’s installment is set to take place on October 2-4, 2015 in Dearborn, MI.
