It seems like tons of people have interest in Evo Fantasy. (PS: If you want to start your own draft, click here). Here’s some general advice for how to draft well

1. Don’t overbid for a certain draft position

You want the 1st pick to draft Mango/Armada/PP? Sure they are strong players, but make sure to not “overbid” to get that 1st draft slot. In previous drafts, some people have paid over 100 points to get a certain draft spot, which almost certainly put them out of contention to win the draft from the get go. If other people really want to have a certain draft spot, let them have it and watch them suffer trying to overcome the initial point deficit.

2. Brackets matter more than player skill level

In a case like Evo, the brackets are released ahead of time. Although Player A might be “better” than Player B, Player B may have an easier bracket than Player A and have a better overall placing. Paying attention to who people can play

3. In the early rounds, aim for talent

It can be tempting to be a little cute in reaching for a player that’s “up and coming” more than a player that’s been established for many years. You want the guaranteed points from your early picks, having your first round pick get “25th” can be devastating.

4. Pick players that have been there

Players such as “MacD” or “Shroomed” have been getting high placings at nationals for years. They are players that tend to thrive in the spotlight as opposed to other players that may get nervous in the bracket, especially in the later stages.

5. Players that play strong-punish characters are strong

Remember Wobbles from last year’s evo? Playing a player that can zero-to-death your stock at any point of the match can be nerve-racking and create unforced mistakes. Value players that know how to wobble, punish hard, or rest (as Jigglypuff) well.
