Not too long ago at CEO 2014, the Project M Top 8 took much longer than expected, causing half of the Melee Top 8 to be played off stream. This angered many fans. In total, the Project M Top 8 lasted 3 hrs 0 mins 33 sec (Source: Twitch Archives), one hour past the allotted time. Normally FGC tourneys only allow for two hours for each game’s Top 8. Some cited that Project M went too long because of the hand warmers and extended coaching between the matches. I decided to do some research to see what the root cause was.

The metagame has many unspoken rules in how to pick stages in a set. Often, these assumptions about what is considered a “good” stage have gone unchallenged. We hear that Yoshi’s Story is a Marth’s Stage and that Pokemon Stadium is a Fox’s stage. The rationale seems to make sense; Marth likes close encounters and cornering his opponent, so Yoshi’s Story seems to be a great choice. Stadium has low ceilings and transformations that seem to favor Fox.
Recently, I’ve been observing Mango and some of his strengths and weaknesses extensively. From watching some of the earlier summer tournaments, I subconsciously noticed that Mango was losing quite often on Stadium, a “Fox Stage”, and began to track his win-loss records.

The biggest melee tournament ever has finally come to a close with C9.Mango coming out on top. The action was exciting, although a bit unexpected. Curse.Hungrybox, arguably played the tournament of his life, taking down long-time rivals, EG.PPMD and P4K EMP Armada, before losing to Mango in grand finals. Fly Amanita and MOR|Axe also performed very well, finishing in the top 8, narrowly losing to PPMD and Armada respectively.

Woo, I’m finally back in my hotel room after a long day of Melee action. It’s been a crazy Evo for all games, especially in Ultra Street Fighter 4 where traditional powerhouses such as Daigo have been eliminated. In melee, there were many exciting matches that were unfortunately played off stream, but as the dust settled, all of the “big 5” made their way into top 8.
