Glenn “gyt” Cravens and Collecting Smash History

By |May 15, 2014|Default, Prog Blog|2 Comments

Prog here. So, in the course of my time in Smash and other fighters, I’ve seen a lot of people whose work needs to be exalted. Glenn Cravens, known to many as “the stats guy,” has been a long time supporter of competitive gaming and has left his footprint on the Smash scene as well. Glenn, I have the honor of chatting with you and discussing something that I personally can’t wait for.

Get On My Level 2014 Top 8 Recap

By |May 14, 2014|Default|3 Comments

I knew as soon as I walked in the door that this tournament was going to be bigger than any of us were expecting. The feeling was bittersweet. On the one hand, the tournament had just started and we’d already exceeded everyone’s expectations for attendance; on the other hand, the pools I had carefully crafted the previous night were now useless.

Three of the top five were in attendance, the sun was shining (after something like 6 months of Winter weather), and everyone was ready to play some Melee. This was the biggest MLG Qualifier in the circuit so far, and the players did not disappoint.

Weekly Wrap Up (5/13/2014)

By |May 13, 2014|Default|0 Comments

Another edition of the weekly wrap up!
Get On My Level (258 Singles Entrants) – 5/10/2014, Toronto, Ontario

Get On My Level was the Canadian MLG qualifier hosted by TO Joe and the Even Match Up Gaming crew. Streamed by VGBootCamp, GOML had quite a few highlights such as GimR being freed from his day job by reaching over 500 subs on twitch and being the first 200+ man Canadian tournament, as well as being the first 1 stock Brawl national. Most notable was Hungrybox’s sets against M2K and mango, winning an extremely close losers finals 3-2 against mew2king and nearly resetting the bracket against Mango after a huge stock deficit in the last game. Cloud9 takes it’s first win over Curse in the new era of Smash as an eSport.

2. CRS|HungryBox

Guest Article: Smash: A Spectacle Sport

By |May 8, 2014|Default|7 Comments

Jason “Papapaint” Durso writes about the state of the community today.
Visions of our Past
Over the past year or so, articles about some of the core aspects of smash have regularly begun with an appeal to its historical presence, how this or that player was only (x) years old, how we’ve lifted the community out of the dark ages through sheer willpower and determination, and so on and so on. These sorts of grand openings are pretty standard rhetorical moves, intended to sediment some routine experience into a bed of nostalgia for the golden ages of smash, when four-stocks flowed like water and even the very best of players had time to warmly discuss the subtleties of their favorite game with relative unknowns. Part of the trouble with rhetoric, though, is that it has the potential to draw straight lines from something in our past (determination to continue playing the game) to something in the present (EVO/MLG cinderella story, documentary, high stream numbers, etc). This wouldn’t be much of an issue, except it does seem as though something is left behind as a result.

I am, of course, just as guilty of this editing process as any other–perhaps even more so. My job is, in a sense, to trim away chunks of the past so that what remains is the essence of what makes smash exciting to see. The clips I compile heavily feature players at their best, or jumping around in excitement after some incredible sequence of events. I don’t include the hours of painstakingly dull friendlies that take place between matches, or the bored faces of spectators watching a monotonously slow puff ditto, or the snoozing players desperately catching up on sleep from the night before. In other words, I generally try to cut out the stuff that no one really wanted to see in the first place.

I should not, therefore, be so surprised when people base their opinions on what they think other people want to see.

Beware of 20xx: Proper Stretching and Breaks!

By |May 7, 2014|Default|8 Comments

In the year 20xx, everyone plays Fox… or gets injured in the process.
Introduction
Recently, two prominent players have sustained injuries playing Smash. Aziz “VGBC|Hax” Al-Yami and Weston “Westballz” Dennis have sustained injuries from playing Smash. Attempting to practice some wavedashes, Hax was sent to the emergency room for a sprained wrist. On twitter, Westballz has cited that his practice sessions have caused him to lose sensation in one of his fingers.
Hax’s cast after going to the ER
Fox and Falco players are very susceptible to hand and wrist related injuries because of how a player has to press buttons. The quick movements put a high amount of strain, especially on the wrists. Many other great Fox mains such as Jman, Mew2King, Silent Wolf, Mang0, and SFAT  have also sustained injuries in the past with carpal tunnel syndrome being the most common.
