The PUC-SP campus in Sao Paulo will be hosting UFSmash, a highly anticipated three day event this coming November 20th. With the inclusion of Smash 64, Project M, Melee singles and doubles and Smash 4 singles and doubles, team DASH has prepared a quality event that caters to the taste of all smashers.
Venue at the PUC-SP campus
Anderson “Dede” Ogura, a local T.O. who has been putting in work since the inception of the Brazilian smash scene back in ’07, explains how they had originally planned this event around the attendance of American powerhouse, SFAT, who due to conflicting schedules wouldn’t be able to attend after all. “The ball had started to roll though, and players from different states in Brazil and some internationals were still signing up. Pretty soon we were facing the biggest attendance list we had ever dealt with.”
Traditionally, every major event in Brazil turns into an arena where major rivalries are settled, and UFSmash will be no exception. Roche, widely considered one of the best players in Chile, will be out for revenge against Brazilian master and defending champ Aisengobay, who defeated him earlier this year in TMSS 3. Roche will also be busy defending his title against Godzrage, the PM Bowser sensation. Mexican player, Far, will be making the longest trip for the tournament and people are expecting big things from his performance on both Melee and PM. In Melee doubles, Caionintendo & Godzrage will be the team to beat.
Smash 64 in Latin America is HUGE, and the Brazilian region has one of the best scenes. Banze and Kort, both attending Genesis 3 this coming January thanks to a donation drive, will have a point to prove among their peers. On the Smash 4 side of things, all eyes are on Player7, who the community has called the “Brazilian ZeRo” due to his undefeated status since the launch of the game.
An event with 200+ participants is not an easy feat, but Dede believes the tournament will be a succesful one. “Even though we don’t have sponsors, we do have some outsider support, primarily with PUC-SP for the venue. The one problem we are trying to solve right now is the amount of setups for the games. Many players are traveling from different states and it’s not easy to carry a CRT around on a long trip.” The event is shaping up to be a great experience for the attendees. In classic smash grassroots fashion, local players will be opening their homes to the 40+ out of state/country visitors for the weekend.
You can check the bracket here and tune in to the livestream this weekend. Expect VOD’s to be uploaded right after.
