PSA: HOW TO PLAN TO ATTEND A TOURNAMENT

By |March 19, 2014|Default|0 Comments

1. General Background
Greetings Melee community! This is D. Disciple and clowsui, and today we are here to speak to you, dear Smasher reader, about saving and planning for tournaments. As high-quality Smash tournaments get larger and more numerous, not only is coordination important for T.O.s, but for attendees also. After all, your experience does not begin at the tournament – it begins as soon as you set your heart and resources on attending, and you only have one heart and limited money.

How To: Creating a Training Plan

By |March 14, 2014|Default|0 Comments

Hey Everyone. Happy Friday!

It’s been an exciting week for Melee as we’ve been confirmed for both Evo and MLG!

There are roughly 3-4 months between today and these tournaments. Every Friday will have a post featuring things that you can train on to prepare for the big days! Each person’s training regimen will be different and by no means is this post going to be the “bible” for everyone.

Let’s get started with Week 1
Set Goals
1. What are some technical skills you want to implement?
– 3-4 months is a long enough time to practice and implement new technology in the game. Perhaps, you’re not familiar with wavedashing and its practical uses. Maybe, you’ve been wondering what this shield dropping business is all about. Write down a list of the things you want to begin practicing.

For Myself
– I’m not really good at doing Shino Stalling or Needle Turnarounds as Sheik. I view these as highly practical techniques that will refine my edge-game, so my goal for the next month will be to learn these techniques proficiently.
– I would like to implement better wavelanding, especially off the ledge.

Mindset: Keep your head up!

By |March 10, 2014|Default|0 Comments

At some point of our smash careers, I think it is safe to say we encounter disappointments whether it be a string of consecutive tournaments in which we don’t make it out of pools or losing to that particular opponent over and over. It can get frustrating, speaking from experience, to put in countless hours of practice to place the same at tournaments or, perhaps, place lower than usual. Sometimes it can make very little sense. For many, the voices of self-doubt and condemnation can easily come in at the first step of adversity. In fact, some of you may be dealing with the stresses of moving up the cruel Melee ladder. So how do we deal with this?

1. Remembering to have fun!

Aside from a few exceptions, most people play Melee as a hobby. As a hobby, the game should provide us entertainment and help us have fun and unwind from the toils of real-world responsibilities. When I get frustrated from playing the game, I find ways to make it fun. Sometimes, I’ll play FFA with items on with friends or watch some enjoyable videos on youtube. Also what has helped me is to enjoy being in the community. After a tough loss, I’ll enjoy my time destressing by chatting and hanging out with the other players from the community by eating or just playing some friendlies.

How to: The “Deep” Training

By |March 6, 2014|Default|6 Comments

Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
After a while, I noticed I was stagnating despite practicing with other players. One of my friends, more commonly known as PewPewU, jokingly said that I should do some “deep” training. After a little bit of training, I was able to get some great insight on some of the holes in my neutral game.

So what is the “Deep” training?
