Guest Article: SKTAR 3 Recap: Brawl Singles

By |June 6, 2014|Default|1 Comment

Going into SKTAR 3, there were a lot of unanswered questions with regards to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl community. Opinions were circling that this would be the final farewell to the game with Smash 4 on the horizon–what was originally a Brawl national series had now been eclipsed in entrants by its counterparts, Melee and Project M. Brawl had a lot to prove on SKTAR weekend, and its players came through in a huge way with an action-packed tournament that captivated even the game’s most vocal critics.

Is the Gap Closing?

By |June 6, 2014|Default|0 Comments

Back in my college days before I tore my knee ligaments, I played pick-up basketball at the UCLA gym, which had 3 open courts. Within these 3 courts came unspoken rules. The best players would play on the first court. When I say best, I mean that they were legitimately solid. These weren’t your typical scrubs that would play once in a while. These players were all above 6’5″ with some of them being good enough to walk on as a bench-dweller on the actual college team. The 2nd court featured players that were decent, but not good enough to play on the first court. The third court featured everyone else that didn’t have freakishly athletic bodies or a Larry Bird-esque shot. Yet even though the talent wasn’t particularly great, we all had our fun, competing against each other in a relatively even playing field. One particular day, the first two courts were backlogged with players, causing a trickling down of players into the third court.

MLG Qualfier: SKTAR 3 Recap

By |June 2, 2014|Default|0 Comments

Day 2’s top 64 bracket continued the Melee excitement. In round 5 of Winner’s, MMG|Shroomed and SS|Soft’s match would end up going to the final frame. With the set tied at 1-1, Shroomed held onto a minor percentage lead and Soft landed a rest that ordinarily would have sent Shroomed to his death. However, as Shroomed was flying towards the stage boundary, the timer hit “0:00:00” just before he hit it, saving Shroomed from the jaws of defeat. S0ft would end up finishing 17th overall, gaining more than enough points to qualify for MLG Finals.
