Guest Article: 13 Years of Melee and Still Going On

By |July 21, 2014|Default|8 Comments

13 years of Melee and still going on?
An article about expectations on Smash 4, hope and fear about the future of Melee
– by Tero @TeroLawliet
About the author:
Tero’s first contact with the competitive smash scene was in 2006, watching MTV True Lifes “I’m a professional gamer” featuring KillaOR. He is the founder of the German Smash Boards, former Melee and Brawl Back Room member on smashboards, and founding member of Salty Playground (until July 2014). Over the years, he has hosted several tournaments (Smash Royale) and has been a TO at most German events. Currently, he lives in Sweden in the Uppsala/Stockholm area.
Introduction
A few days ago I stumbled across this article called “Melee the masterpiece, Melee the demon” and I was fascinated by its last paragraph:
For him, Melee was more than a sequel, more than a game even. It was his idée fixe, his impossible ambition to create something infinitely deep and comfortably shallow at the same time. Now Melee has become his Pinkerton: A revitalized cult masterpiece, a bolt of lightning caught in a bottle, and the one puzzle piece that could fix everything… if it didn’t already belong to another era.- Joshus Calixto

Tournament Rules: Does Project M need a Stock Reduction?

By |July 18, 2014|Default|24 Comments

by MIOM|Tafokints

Not too long ago at CEO 2014, the Project M Top 8 took much longer than expected, causing half of the Melee Top 8 to be played off stream. This angered many fans.  In total, the Project M Top 8 lasted 3 hrs 0 mins 33 sec (Source: Twitch Archives), one hour past the allotted time. Normally FGC tourneys only allow for two hours for each game’s Top 8. Some cited that Project M went too long because of the hand warmers and extended coaching between the matches. I decided to do some research to see what the root cause was.

TafoStats: How Mew2King lost at Stage-Select

By |July 17, 2014|Default|10 Comments

by MIOM|Tafokints

The metagame has many unspoken rules in how to pick stages in a set. Often, these assumptions about what is considered a “good” stage have gone unchallenged. We hear that Yoshi’s Story is a Marth’s Stage and that Pokemon Stadium is a Fox’s stage. The rationale seems to make sense; Marth likes close encounters and cornering his opponent, so Yoshi’s Story seems to be a great choice. Stadium has low ceilings and transformations that seem to favor Fox.

Recently, I’ve been observing Mango and some of his strengths and weaknesses extensively.  From watching some of the earlier summer tournaments, I subconsciously noticed that Mango was losing quite often on Stadium, a “Fox Stage”, and began to track his win-loss records.

Note: The Weekly Wrap Up post will go up tomorrow

Top 8 Recap (Videos are Here)

The biggest melee tournament ever has finally come to a close with C9.Mango coming out on top. The action was exciting, although a bit unexpected. Curse.Hungrybox, arguably played the tournament of his life, taking down long-time rivals, EG.PPMD and P4K EMP Armada, before losing to Mango in grand finals. Fly Amanita and MOR|Axe also performed very well, finishing in the top 8, narrowly losing to PPMD and Armada respectively.

Evo 2014: Day 2 Excitement

By |July 12, 2014|Default|0 Comments

By MIOM|TaFoKiNtS

Woo, I’m finally back in my hotel room after a long day of Melee action. It’s been a crazy Evo for all games, especially in Ultra Street Fighter 4 where traditional powerhouses such as Daigo have been eliminated. In melee, there were many exciting matches that were unfortunately played off stream, but as the dust settled, all of the “big 5” made their way into top 8.

The stream will resume on the main stage at 1:30 PM PST @ www.twitch.tv/srkevo1

The Ultimate Rivalry

By |July 9, 2014|Default|8 Comments

by MIOM|Tafokints

It wasn’t too long ago when watching Mango-Armada was like eating a fine delicacy. It was rare and such a delight on the senses. This summer we’ve seen them play almost every week, yet the narrative is still compelling. Let’s run a few numbers.

Overall
Sets: They are tied at 8-8.
Game count: Armada has a slim lead after 65 games at 33-32.

Mango won Genesis 1, Armada won Genesis 2.
Armada won Apex 2012 and 2013. Mango won Evo 2013.
