Smash 4 Gameplay Impressions

By |August 12, 2014|Default|4 Comments

by Larry “DEHF” Holland
Thoughts on Smash 4

I want to start off by saying a lot of what I’m about to say comes from watching people and the small amount of time I had to play the game at SDCC. Although I was able to play some 1v1 no item matches during the SDCC tournament, most of the matches I played were 4 player ffa with items on.
Game Mechanics

The best description I can give on how I felt the game played is a mix between Smash 64 and Brawl. One of the things that made me feel like it had a Smash 64 feel was the movement. Dashing in this game is a step above Brawl, one of the obvious reasons being you no longer have a chance of tripping. You can also stop your dash animation by shielding like you can do in Smash 64 and Melee. I believe this will add a lot quick weaving in and out of characters ranges through dash.

Weekly Wrap Up (8/12/2014)

By |August 12, 2014|Default|1 Comment

Another Weekly Wrap Up! If you’d like your tournament to be featured, fill out this form in the future.!
Mayhem (227 Singles Entrants) – 8/9/2014, San Gabriel, CA
Mayhem is a Melee and Project M LOCAL in SoCal. There was 317 Unique entrants, 227 in Melee, and 173 in PM, with 94 entering both. All this done in 1 day. This is double our previous largest event. Player register ahead of time and pay at the venue. We took over 200 payments in under 90 minutes. The venue opened to the public at 11:00am. Melee finished a little after 1:00am and PM finished a little after 1:30am.
We had special out of state guess Hungrybox come out before moving back to Florida. He wasn’t the reason so many people came out (though i’m sure it helped). Post EVO hype and SoCal not having an SSS or Mayhem since EVO helped boost numbers to INSANE amounts. There were many new players and it was the 1st tournament for many. Overall heard many positive things from these new players and they seemed to enjoy themselves.
Make sure you don’t miss out on the next Mayhem Oct 4th. Melee will be streamed on twitch.tv/mikehazegaming

Weekly Wrap Up (8/5/2014)

By |August 5, 2014|Default|3 Comments

Another Weekly Wrap Up! This week featured several international tournaments and Zenith. If you’d like your tournament to be featured, fill out this form in the future.!
Zenith 2014 (280+ Singles Entrants) – 8/2/2014, Brooklyn, NY
An exciting weekend of Smash on the East coast that even featured actor, Dylan Sprouse. Singles featured some upsets in bracket as Wizzrobe defeated Axe in Winners and The Moon defeated Fly Amanita in Loser’s. Overall, The Moon played impressively well, finishing 9th and overcoming an early loss to Phish-it. The later matches in Top 8 were all intense as Axe was on the brink of defeat several times before finally losing to Zhu in a contested 5 game set. In winner’s, things look very promising for Hax as he was able to take a 2-0 lead before losing 3 straight to Mew2King. Hax ended up narrowly beating Zhu to get a shot at redemption. Hax managed to take set 1 of grand finals before losing steam and falling to Mew2King, the champion of Zenith.

SDCC Smash 4 Tournament Recap and Impressions

King Koopa Reigns!

Very quickly, people discovered that Bowser was powerful in free for alls. The first three rounds were free-for-alls in which the player with the highest point total moves on. As a result, KOs were highly valued. Bowser’s down+B, the Bowser-Bomb, could KO opponents easily at the 80-100% range. Given the chaotic nature of FFAs, it was very simple to catch un-suspecting opponents with the Bowser-Bomb. In addition, Bowser’s forward smash and aerials KO’d people very quickly. Bowser’s heavy weight also proved to be a valuable asset as he was living until 150-180%.

Several players were not used to the unorthodox control scheme, so as a result, the more “finesse” characters were much more difficult to adjust to. Many people throughout the tournament missed inputs, which would lead them open to attacks such as strong forward-smashes.

An Alternative Way to Looking at Advanced Techniques

By |July 24, 2014|Default|2 Comments

by MIOM|Tafokints

I remember very vividly going to my first tournament in High School. It was a doubles tournament that had me really excited. To top it off, they used the correct ruleset: 4 stocks, best of three sets, no items, and tournament stages. We were all very excited to play. During the first day of the tournament, we were fooling around and wave-dashing in friendlies. Immediately, a bunch of other bystanders were both impressed and intimidated by us. It was funny because, at the time, I had no idea how to use wave-dashing in actual matches, but it was just a fancy tool that for some reason made people think we were professional smashers.

Video: Wak’s Classic How to Play Video
When new players ask for help in Melee Social, Reddit, or Smashboards, we do an injustice by telling them to learn techniques such as wave-dashing and shield-dropping without any context. Furthermore, the community has instilled the idea that in order to be decent at the game, you need to learn a laundry list of techniques to survive. I’m not neglecting the importance of technical skill or the ability to perform moves on command, but I’d like to shift our paradigm in how we approach using advanced techniques.
