SWEET XVII (182 Singles Entrants) – 1/24/2015, Ann Arbor, MI

Armada, in town during the week between Paragon and Apex, took care of business and even busted out the Fox in Grand Finals for extra style points. KJH made a huge statement by defeating Duck for the second time in two weeks, giving the Samus main a salty one-way ticket out of the bracket in Losers Finals. Prince Abu, Shady, and Moose rounded out the top 6. Elsewhere in bracket, notable upsets occurred as Juggleguy eliminated Kalamazhu in the 9th place match and JU4N stunned Beach to knock him out in 17th place. Overall, this was the biggest single-day tourney in Michigan history, even surpassing a few previous two-day turnouts such as TBH3 and Super SWEET.

Mayhem (182 Singles Entrants) – 1/24/2015, South Pasadena, CA

IMG_1182

So many good things about this Mayhem. Our 2nd largest event to date, largest of our Melee only tourneys. 40 teams and 182 singles entrants. It was also the most efficient tourney to date starting signups at 10:30am and ended at 10:30pm. We had our stream running during top 32. There were event parents who came with 6 kids (some of which younger than melee!!).
Doubles went as expected based off seeding. Fiction & MacD taking first and getting in their last practice for Apex.
1st Fiction & MacD
2nd Reno & Lucky
3rd OXY SUNG475 & MikeHAZE
Singles on the other hand was full of surprises. The biggest being Kira’s outstanding performance defeating MacD & Sung before losing to Fiction in Winners. He wasn’t done yet though, as he defeated HugS in losers before losing to Fly and finishing 4th. Lucky and Fiction fought in both Winners/Grand Finals. The games were close despite what the set count shows. Lucky is holding strong at the top of SoCal, but we’ll see what happens as all of SoCal’s top players will be looking to shine at Apex this weekend.
Videos will be uploaded to MacD’s youtube, but if you can’t wait, the archives can be found at MacD’s twitch channel.

Although the venue was a bit crowded and smash 4 couldn’t finish in time, MVG’s presence was promising as there were Nintendo representatives there and a great environment was present. Hoping MVG could improve on the venue and more tourneys are held. BUT AXE BEATING M2K 3-2, 3-0 THO? AZ HYPE!

Super Nebulous 2 (123 Singles Entrants) – 1/24/2015, New York, NY

Super Nebulous 2 was a crazy tournament. Since the lease for the new venue doesn’t start til feb 1st, our schedule was completely up in the air. Yet, we still managed to do doubles, then pools, then a special new format dreamt up by MDZ, where we ran 3 brackets: pro (1/2 seed in pools), intermediate (3/4 seed in pools), and amateur (anyone else). Due to the large amount of setups, we were able to run all of these on time, and finish the tournament in about 8 hours total. This tournament also featured players from Germany, Sweden, and England, making this the most international nebulous to date.
There were a number of hugs upsets as well.
Starting in doubles, resident NYC ColumbiaU teams pros Run ‘N’ Gun (Fiya + Zero Omega) managed to take a set off the swedish Android + CalleW. Our other consistent NYC team, Grab ‘N’ Go (DJ Nintendo + The Moon) made an mockery of every other team, winning the entire tournament without dropping a game.
In singles, we saw an even larger number of upsets, starting from pools:
dizzkidboogie > calle w
hectohertz > vj
tian > otg
chuuper > cheezpuff
ryan-k > zanguzen
eikelmann > emukiller
mike-haggar > green ranger
Moving on to the actual bracket, we saw even more insanity:
vino > dev
beerman > calle w
fuzzyness > android
the moon > ice
fiya > dev
dudutsai > calle w
vino > ryan-k
emukiller > zoler
zanguzen > android
finallly culminating in an intense WF set, between Hax and Moon. Hax, coming off a hand injury, was severely out of practice. Before yesterday, their record was at least 20-0 in Hax’s favor. WF was a tight set going to gave 5, and on last stock, Hax missed a perfect ledgedash causing an SD, giving Moon his first set win against Hax in tournament! Hax went on to make quick work of Ice in LF, before rematching Moon to get 3-0’d quickly. Moon wins a tournament with Hax present! A historic day for NYC smash!
NYC is hype for Apex, are you guys?

MVG Endgame (120 Singles Entrants) – 1/24/2015, Tempe, Arizona

What was originally supposed to be a focused outreach tournament at the Endgame Arcade Bar incredibly turned into the largest tournament AZ has ever seen. A 119 entrants Smash 4 bracket was also ran, doubling the previous record for overall attendance, set earlier this year at Smash the Target (119 entrants).
While Axe besting mew2king to win the tournament was indisputably the highlight of the night, there were many other great sets during the night. Medz versus Forward in Losers Semis, for example, was perhaps one of the most exciting, closest matches AZ has ever had.
With two 110+ Melee tournaments in AZ just this month, it is safe to say that AZ Melee is alive and strong, and looking to get bigger in the future.

KING OF GARDEN STATE (hosted by Chain-Ace at Yestercades in Red Bank) was a tournament where only current New Jersey residents could participate in singles. The tournament was the biggest Melee event at Yestercades to date, with 84 singles entrants! Geeksboro Apex Prep Sesh (57 Singles Entrants) – 1/25/2015, Greensboro, NC

After a 4-month hiatus, Geeksboro Coffeehouse Cinema returned to hosting Melee locals in Greensboro, NC. The Geeksboro Apex Prep Sesh had 57 entrants, which were split up into 8 pools of ~7, with top 2 advancing to a final 16-man bracket. The recently updated NC PRs and motivation for Apex made this tournament very competitive and a huge success. $mike and ~twitch~ advanced to winners finals with relative ease, and their set was extremely tight until an explosive end with $mike taking it 3-2. In losers semis, Sky had a close run with Tah., but Tah. managed to defeat him 2-1. Losers finals between Tah. and twitch was a display of twitch’s dominance, ending with a quick 3-0 in twitch’s favor. Finally, in grand finals, twitch reset the bracket vs $mike, but $mike adjusted his play to win the whole tournament 3-2 in a nailbiting set.

Queen City Melee V (50 Singles Entrants) – 1/25/2015, Burlington, Vermont

It was awesome. The still young scene of Vermont got to meet skilled players and get some help from more experienced members of the community. Thus far it’s been our largest turnout, and definitely a humbling and exciting experience. It’s not often enough that smashers from Quebec and New England get to duke it out, so we’re all quite excited for the future of this region.

One More Round Winter Circuit #3 (42 Singles Entrants) – 1/25/2015, Toronto, ON

Videos coming soon to youtube.com/user/teammanopo/
The third tournament in the One More Round Melee Circuit (leading up to a final invitational event) was also the first in Toronto’s latest venue, the Ryerson University Tecumseh Auditorium.
42 entrants isn’t large for Toronto locals anymore, but it is pretty impressive considering the Student Union only gave the TO 4 days’ notice before the event.
The absence of any regional “gods” made everything more interesting. Lockon upset Toast in Winners and Sanu in Losers, while Scidadle’s impressive run through Losers was halted by Jamrun. Jamrun’s own reign finally came to an end in Losers Semis, where HammerTime demonstrated his own improvements in the ICs vs. Peach matchup.
n0ne and EMG|idea met in Winners Finals, as predicted, but it wasn’t a free ride – Jamrun and HammerTime brought both sides of Winners Semis to game 5, respectively. idea and n0ne’s equally close Jigglypuff vs. Falcon set ended in idea’s favour, and they met again in Grand Finals for a quick 3-0 by idea.
Then came the post-tournament Chipotle.

PB’s Danger Zone (24 Singles Entrants) – 1/24/2015, Chagrin Falls, OH

A small cozy tournament in Chagrin Falls, OH had a decent showing despite the awful weather in the Northeast. Hot off the tails of Pittsburgh’s massive success of Man On A Ledge getting 80 entrants the PGH crew came down to ohio to see if they could take the ohio players. PGH Carroll and Dempt faced off in winners semis with Dempt taking the win making Carroll run all the way back in losers and taking the losers finals match to face off with 4% in grand Finals. 4% took the tournament in game 5 with some solid Puff play.
Besides some awesome smash action the tournament was held in a gym and had the “Danger Zone” portion before the bracket. This included feats of bravery, an obstacle course, and some American Gladiator style games showing off some of the agility and prowess of PGHNEOH.
