Smash INTENSIFIES (101 Singles Entrants) – 11/29/2014, Montreal, QC, Canada

Announced 3 weeks ago, Montreal’s Smash INTENSIFIES was the first regional in more than 8 months and still managed to lure more than a hundred contestants into entering Melee Singles and about 220 unique entrants overall (Melee, PM, Sm4sh).
In spite of the absence of local titans Kage The Warrior, Lampadaires (PkmVodka) and Diakonos, the tournament still featured a hefty ammount of top players: Vwins, the legendary peach player who came out of retirement for this event; Bam, strongest falco player in Canada and Chester01, oldschool player who also took the dust out of his controller recently.
However, the strongest challenger was definitely WeonX, Fox main hailing from Toronto and arguably Canada’s second best player.
The one day tournament ran very well thanks to the dedication of TO David ”Rice” Yeung and his crew of assistants.
The 32 man bracket thinned itself into an intense top 4 featuring WeonX, Bam, Vwins and Chester.
The winner’s finals set between Vwins and WeonX’s Marth was an incredible display of high level melee, with Vwins upsetting WeonX with a 3-2 victory to enter Grand Finals.
Meanwhile, Chester01 didn’t manage to stop Bam’s patient Falco play, earning him an honest 4th place finish.
The hypest set of the tournament was definitely Loser’s Finals Bam vs WeonX, as it ended up being a tight Space Animals matchup, with Bam sending home the out of town invader with a 3-2 victory, in an incredible last stock situation. The grand finals were thus a Montreal classic, with Vwins defeating Bam 3-2 and claiming his deserved 1st place.
The tournament was generally a great success in terms of attendance for the Montreal Smash community, and also in terms of competition, with local up and coming players TheWaz and HotHungarianHurricane both rounding up the top 5.
Unfortunately, the streamer had health problems and the back-up equipment had some technical issues, so there is no footage of the tournament beside cellphone shots.

Avalon VI (80 Singles Entrants) – 11/29/2014, Zoetermeer

Marc and Remen returned with the 6th edition in the successful Avalon series, the premiere smash event in the Netherlands. Aside from Melee, the main event with 80 players in attendance, the tournament also housed smash4 3DS and Brawl. With the exception of Zgetto and Marc, of which the latter didn’t enter due to hosting duties, all the dutch top melee players were present. In addition, Ice, Over and [A]Armada, 3 very strong international players, made the trip which resulted in some intense sets against in particular Jeapie and Amsah which some exciting upsets in the european smash landscape. A overview of the matches to look out for was released shortly before the tournament and can be found here: http://bit.ly/1B3xqlh
Mr-R, who recently won Sky Williams Smash4 invitational, finished first in Smash4 after beating Armada in both winners and grand finals. iStudying finished 3rd.
Brawl was also won by Mr-R after beating iStudying. Tonie finished 3rd place.
Though Avalon housed 3 smash games and 5 events in one day the tournament finished well on time. The biggest factor for this was the requirement to register and pay two weeks up front, the other was tight disciplined hosting.

In a close battle, Columbia clutched it out against Rutgers to win the the tri-state melee games! They move on to play against UMB from the New England Melee Games, which will occur in the Salty Suite at Apex on VGBC.
NYC’s #1 doubles pair (Grab N Go) showed that no matter how good + Hax+DoH was, if it ain’t Hax+M2K, its done. The NYC boys brought it back in two sets after losing to Swift+HDL in winners.
