UIUC Welcome Week 2014 (125 Singles Entrants) – 8/27/2014, Champaign, IL

There’s nothing remotely noteworthy about an unseeded straight-bracket Champaign local–except when it draws 125 entrants. The University of Illinois provided a venue and a little advertising, and scads of variously competitive players came crawling out of the woodwork.
Matt R continued his streak of dominance at locals. After a surprising loss to Pseudoturtle’s ganon early in winners, child prodigy 0prz blew loser’s apart with his fox/falco/puff and managed to beat BERT|7ent for the first time ever in loser’s finals before getting bopped by Matt R.

SoCal Pizza 1 (100 Singles Entrants) – 8/27/2014, Mission Viejo, CA

We started a new series in SoCal on Wednesday nights in Mission Viejo. It’s at a local pizza joint similar to a Lamppost Pizza. The idea was to have hangout with Pizza, Beer, and some melee so that Orange County players could come together, have fun, and help players get to know each other. We wanted to offer a $2 singles tourney so that lots of newer players would also have the chance to get some tourney experience, and to keep it as a local event not trying to compete with the main weekend events.
We ended up with 100 people signing up for the tourney. We did the best we could to accommodate this, but things ran later than we wanted (1am). Because of this, the top 3 split. MacD beat Stab in WF, and Alex19 beat Squid in Losers Semis. There was a lot of alcohol involved, so results aren’t what you might normally expect. It will run better/quicker this week, and hopefully we can get a stream for you guys in the near future

Smash @ Clarendon Happy Hour (88 Singles Entrants) – 8/29/2014, Arlington, VA

The final Clarendon tournament of the summer was one of the most stacked local events MD/VA has had in quite some time, with Chillin, ChuDat, Nintendude, Redd, Milkman, Azen, DP, Plank, DoH, Wenbo, and more in attendance. Azen proved once again that he still has what it takes to compete with the region’s elite talent by knocking DoH out of winners and defeating Sypher and Bones in losers before falling to Nintendude in loser’s quarters. Also with an impressive run was Milkman, advancing to winners finals with wins over AGLET, Chillin, and Nintendude.
Redd, who has been “training by himself in the woods” for the past few months, came out strong, routing DP and Milkman on his way to grand finals. Chillin, despite being down 0-2 in grands from losers bracket, worked some birthday magic to stun Redd with a 6-1 comeback run.

Man on a Ledge (60 Singles Entrants) – 8/29/2014, Pittsburgh, PA

Man on a Ledge is a weekly smash tournament held in Pittsburgh, focused on Melee and Project M, to help encourage the local scene to improve and give them some regular tournament experience. This week, both Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh returned for the fall semester, and with Pitt’s Activities Fair receiving 286 sign-ups for joining the school club, we were expecting an extremely large turnout. Though 60 is substantially smaller than 286, this was the biggest MoaL yet, and was over a dozen tournament-goer’s very first tournament experience! We took them aside at the start and explained the basics of double elim., sets, stage selection & character selection, and encouraged them to ask questions and stay awhile to play friendlies! It was an extremely successful showing of the community, and we’re hoping everyone comes back next week. Taki, ranked 2nd on PGH’s PR, got 1st this week (#nothingeverchanges), with Nakamaru & TheLake rounding off top 3. Newcomer to the PR, and low-tech-legend, Borp, spent much of his tournament playing Kirby, and probably 4-stocking several newcomers, got 4th. Despite having 60 entrants and ~12 setups, the tournament was ran extremely successful (~4-5 hours), and was a good example to other schools on how to handle the start of a new school year.

AFK Games Weekly (30 Singles Entrants) – 8/29/2014, Charleston, West Virginia

Less than a year ago, it seemed as if West Virginia’s smash scene were completely dead. That is, until a local game shop in Charleston gained interest in Smash, and decided to host weeklies. This past week, we broke our record of entrants at AFK with 30, which is really huge for us. Hopefully we can continue to consistently pull big numbers and watch WV grow!

Nebulous 12 (28 Singles Entrants) – 8/30/2014, New York, New York

Although a rather small tournament, the competition at Nebulous was still at a high skill level attracting regulars such as Hax, The Moon, DJ Nintendo, and Ryobeat along with special guests Admiral and Qerb, the renowned Game and Watch. However, no one expected Louis, a Veteran Marth Player from Florida to sweep the competition. Narrowly losing to the Moon in Winners, he beat Sled, Admiral, and Ryobeat to secure a 4th place spot. DJ Nintendo met Hax in Grand finals with Pikachu, and managed to take a game. In the end, Hax reigned supreme.
