Summary
Slow and steady wins the race. Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma has been considered a top 5 player since as early as 2009, and 6 years later he’s at his peak. Amazingly, he’s reached this point by playing Jigglypuff alone, and although other players have picked up higher-tier characters to try to defeat him, Hbox has remained steadfast in his commitment to his beloved character.
Originally the thorn in Armada’s side, Hungrybox figured out his Young Link counterpick at last year’s EVO; consequently, this year Armada made the decision to pick up Fox to combat him. That’s been the story of Hungrybox’s 2015: A constant onslaught of the best players in the world playing the best character in the game. Systematically, Hungrybox has taken them all out. He’s beaten Foxes played by Mew2King, Armada, Leffen, and even Mango this year, and has destroyed dozens of A- and B- tier Foxes besides. Most memorable was The Big House 5, where Hungrybox’s entire run through the top 128 bracket was one Fox after another.
As a result, his Puff has had to adopt many different styles to find success; when faced against Leffen at MVG Sandstorm, we saw aggression come out in full force to win him the set, and against Armada, he utilized a very conservative ledge-camping strategy to prevail at FC Return until Armada figured out how to fight it at Evo. His dedication to advancing the metagame for his solo main in spite of these difficulties is admirable; he has compared his hardest and most common matchup to “juggling a balloon with scissors for hands.”
Yet his year has not been without its struggles; he’s dropped sets to Professor Pro, PewPewU, and Westballz, and even with his adaptations he still has difficulty with Leffen and Armada. However, Hungrybox has demonstrated that regardless of these setbacks, he is poised to be an absolute top competitor in 2016 and one of the few Americans capable of matching the Swedes. What lies in the year ahead remains to be seen; Debiedma is now a successful engineer and a full-time working man. In the meantime, the world holds its breath as we wait to see if a Jigglypuff player will return to the throne of number one in the world.

1/8/2016 – SSBMRank Recap

SSBMRank is a big undertaking every year. We could have not done this without the help of HTC, who generously helped us out with this year’s production values. Nick, Darkdragoon, was a workhorse with the formatting and the graphics this year as well. We also had countless volunteers that helped out with numerous tasks.
