Summary
2015 has been a difficult year for the Mango Nation. After a year where The Kid could not have been more dominant, Joseph “Mango” Marquez started off 2015 in rough shape. High on hubris and standing up for his friend Chillindude after the latter’s vicious 5-0 defeat at the hands of Leffen, Mango lost a $1000 money match against the Swedish Fox main at Apex 2015. Later in the tournament, he was nearly eliminated by aMSa and ended up getting 3-0’d by Armada, losing two games to his new Fox. Although he was mostly in good spirits about it at the time, this set the tone to a disappointing year for the previous number 1 player in the world.
There were flashes of hope in the first half of the year with his performances at I’m Not Yelling, Press Start, and the Australian tournament BAM 7, but by the time summer came around, it seemed the rest of the field had caught up. Mango found dangerous new enemies in Plup, Westballz, and Leffen, who collectively took nine sets from him this year, and experienced his worst ever year against Armada, finishing 2015 with a 2-7 record in sets with him. His fans all hoped that he would pull it together for EVO, telling themselves that Mango could win any tournament that he wanted. With a win at EVO 2015, Mango would have joined Marvel vs. Capcom legend Justin Wong as only the second person to win three consecutive EVOs, but on the eve of top 8, he was sent to loser’s bracket by Plup and looked shaky against Druggedfox. The next day, in front of Melee’s largest audience and a ballroom packed with people shouting his name, Mango’s reign officially fell at the hands of Hungrybox, an old rival with whom Mango had an incredible 25-5 set record against at nationals. A stunned crowd watched as Mango threw himself off the edge multiple times and gave up his crown in the process.
Losing to Hungrybox wasn’t an isolated incident, either. He dropped another set to him at The Big House 5, where he also lost to Mew2King and placed 4th. Even with impressive performances at Paragon Los Angeles, Smash Summit, and WTFox, Mango has let the rest of the field catch up, and now he’s struggling against players whom he destroyed as recently as a year ago. With claims that he’s dropping Fox in favor of being a solo Falco main again (even playing a set as Falco against Armada’s Peach, his first since Genesis I), it remains to be seen what lies in store for the kid in 2016. We know he’s been humbled, we know he’s hungry for it, and we also know he’s still capable. All that remains is for him to prove it.

1/8/2016 – SSBMRank Recap

SSBMRank is a big undertaking every year. We could have not done this without the help of HTC, who generously helped us out with this year’s production values. Nick, Darkdragoon, was a workhorse with the formatting and the graphics this year as well. We also had countless volunteers that helped out with numerous tasks.
